An air booster raises the pressure of an existing compressed-air supply. Selecting one means matching the inlet supply to the required outlet pressure and delivered flow. A maximum pressure rating by itself is not a working-duty specification.
Define the pressure requirement at the process
A booster receives already compressed air and compresses it further. Cooling and conditioning may be needed as part of the system. Atlas Copco’s booster compressor guide explains the arrangement. Its example ratings describe its own equipment and should not be transferred to another manufacturer’s products.
If only one process needs higher pressure, compare a dedicated boosting arrangement with other supply options. First check whether an apparent pressure shortfall comes from restricted piping, filtration or an undersized supply. Raising pressure is not a substitute for finding the cause of an unexpected pressure drop.
Use operating data, not a single gauge reading
- Measure minimum and normal booster inlet pressure while the plant is operating.
- Specify the pressure required at the process during flow, including downstream losses.
- List average and peak flow with the reference conditions used for the units.
- Describe cycle duration, operating hours and whether the demand is continuous or intermittent.
- Record inlet-air temperature and quality, electrical supply, cooling conditions and installation space.
Ask the supplier to demonstrate the proposed model’s output at the lowest expected inlet pressure and required discharge pressure. Haskel’s gas booster guidance illustrates why falling supply pressure and restrictive piping can prevent a booster from delivering the expected flow. Its air-driven gas-booster details are not performance specifications for electrically driven Ozen air boosters.
Keep the upstream and downstream system in the review
The upstream compressor must support both the booster and the remaining plant demand. Include storage and control behavior in the supplier’s review, particularly when the high-pressure process starts suddenly. Request a description of how the system responds to low inlet pressure and how it recovers after a peak.
Specify downstream components for the proposed pressure and temperature. Have the equipment supplier define the appropriate protection, isolation and operating instructions for the complete arrangement. Do not treat an air booster as suitable for a different gas without explicit manufacturer confirmation.
Compare the Ozen booster options
Review the OABC D screw booster and OABR piston booster. Ask for a model selection based on your flow and duty cycle. Ratings for a particular stage configuration should not be generalized to an entire product family.
