Choosing between a variable speed drive (VSD) and a fixed-speed rotary screw compressor starts with your air demand. A nameplate horsepower rating does not describe how a compressor will operate across a production week. Record airflow, pressure and operating hours before comparing equipment.
How the control approaches differ
A VSD compressor adjusts motor speed within its permitted operating range to respond to changing demand. A fixed-speed compressor runs its motor at a set speed and uses its control system to manage delivery as demand changes. Actual power consumption depends on the compressor, controls and operating point.
For systems with multiple compressors, control coordination matters. The Australian Government’s compressed air guidance recommends matching compressor operation to demand and using an efficient part-load machine for trimming. A VSD machine can serve that role, while another compressor supplies a steadier base load. Selection still depends on the measured demand range.
When to compare VSD and fixed speed
If production changes substantially between shifts or machines cycle independently, request performance data across the expected flow range. If demand remains near a consistent operating point for long periods, compare fixed-speed performance at that point as well. Neither description replaces a system assessment, and VSD alone does not establish an energy savings percentage.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s compressed air resources treat efficiency as a system issue. Leaks, pressure losses, air storage and controls belong in the comparison alongside the compressor.
Build a useful comparison
- Record normal, minimum and peak demand, including idle periods and simultaneous equipment operation.
- Identify the pressure required at the most demanding point of use, then document losses between that point and the compressor.
- Ask for delivered airflow and package input power at matching pressure and reference conditions.
- Request the VSD operating range and the proposed behavior when demand falls below it.
- For multiple machines, ask which unit supplies base load, which trims demand and how the controller avoids conflicting operation.
- Compare installation, maintenance and estimated annual energy cost using your operating schedule and electricity tariff.
A purchasing example
Consider a facility adding a second shift while keeping a small weekend maintenance crew. Its purchasing brief should distinguish weekday production from weekend demand. Ask suppliers to explain both operating cases, rather than sizing from the largest connected air requirement alone. If the weekend load sits outside the proposed compressor’s efficient range, request an alternative system arrangement.
